Photos and videos of these multicolored marvels flood the internet but trust us, no enhancement is needed to appreciate their splendor.

Peru's Rainbow Mountain. Your Ultimate Journey Planner

In fact, National Geographic has recognized the Rainbow Mountains as one of their "100 places to visit in a lifetime". Don't just read about it, experience it for yourself! A trip to Vinicunca is an adventure of a lifetime that you won't want to miss. So why wait? The Rainbow Mountains of Peru are waiting for you!

How did the mountains become colorful?

Rainbow Mountain is a breathtaking sight to behold. Its layers of brilliant turquoise, scarlet, and mustard hues are a testament to the unique mineral content that has been meticulously crafted over millions of years. The potent tectonic shifts and persistent wind erosion of the high Andean landscape revealed these colorful stratifications. Previously hidden from view by a glacier, global warming has caused its dissolution, exposing the radiant spectacle beneath.

While it was initially a captivating detour on the Ausangate Trek, more accessible 1- and 2-day tour routes have been introduced in recent years, allowing a wider audience to witness this natural wonder.

Where are the Rainbow Mountains in Peru?

The Rainbow Mountains can be found in the province of Quispicanchis, just 62 miles (100 kilometers) away from Cusco. These mountains sit at a height of 17,060 feet (5200 meters) above sea level and are surrounded by snow-capped peaks and stunning turquoise lagoons. From this location, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking sight of the Ausangate glacier, a revered mountain for the Incas and a place where pilgrims gather every year to celebrate Qoyllur Rit'i day.

How To Reach The Rainbow Mountains?

Reaching this breathtaking spectacle independently can be quite a challenge as there are no direct buses from Cusco. You can take a taxi (a three-hour journey from Cusco) or find a minivan headed towards Puno. The minivan will take you to the village of Pitumarca. From Pitumarca, you will then need to reach the village of Ocefina (Chillca), from where you can begin your trek to the Rainbow Mountains.

The easiest way to witness the Rainbow Mountains is by joining a guided tour.

Tours To The Rainbow Mountains / Vinicunca or Palccoyo

When searching for a tour operator, it's important to choose one that begins early in the morning. This allows you to experience the magic of these locations without the crowds. If you depart from Cusco later in the day, you'll find yourself sharing the Rainbow Mountains with thousands of other travelers.

Our tours start at 3 a.m. and last the entire day. This is no easy excursion; travelers must traverse uphill and downhill for many kilometers, which can be quite challenging at an altitude of over 16,404 feet (5000 meters).

An alternative option is the tour to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain. Visitors can get transportation close to the mountain and only need to walk for about 20 minutes to witness the spectacular colors!

Just imagine the excitement of standing before these towering peaks, with vibrant colors emanating from every crevice. These masterpieces took millions of years to form! The Rainbow Mountains are waiting for you - will you answer their call?

When Is The Best Time To Visit Rainbow Mountain?

The towering Andes of Peru are marked by two distinct seasonal shifts: the dry spell, extending approximately from April through October, and the wet period, running from November to March. The latter sees the most intense rainfall in January and February, while April and October generally offer pleasant weather as they mark the transition between seasons.

Due to its lofty altitude and chilling temperatures, Rainbow Mountain experiences snowfall during the rainy season. It's not the most opportune time to embark on your journey to Vinicunca, as a blanket of snow will likely shroud the vibrant mountain hues. As a result, tours are frequently canceled during this period due to adverse weather conditions. Hence, for an unobstructed view of Rainbow Mountain's resplendent palette, it's recommended to schedule your visit between April and October.

Packing Essentials

  • Ensure you have a reusable water bottle filled to the brim.
  • Carry energy-boosting snacks for your hike, and remember to take all your litter back with you.
  • You can also find local vendors selling candies, drinks, and bite-sized snacks near the trail's commencement.
  • Keep Peruvian Soles in smaller denominations (S/.20 and S/.40) on hand if you plan to hire a horse for the ride.
  • Invest in comfortable, traction-friendly hiking shoes.
  • Don't forget a cozy hat to keep you warm.
  • Dress in multiple layers to be ready for any weather surprises.
  • Always carry sunscreen and sunglasses. The sun's UV rays can be particularly intense at high altitudes, so protection is vital.
  • And last but not least, bring along your camera to freeze the moments and capture the magnificence of the Mountain of 7 colors (Rainbow Mountain).

What's the Altitude of Rainbow Mountain? Understanding Altitude Sickness

The prospect of altitude sickness is a significant concern for travelers visiting Rainbow Mountain. This health issue arises from oxygen scarcity at elevated altitudes, typically above 2,500 meters (8,000 feet) above sea level. Given that Rainbow Mountain soars to an altitude of 5,200 meters (17,060 feet), it's well beyond the elevation at which altitude sickness can occur.

Altitude sickness, or 'soroche' as it's known in Peru, manifests symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and breathlessness. In isolated instances, these symptoms may escalate into more severe health conditions. Owing to the extra stress exerted on the heart due to reduced oxygen levels, individuals with a history of cardiac conditions are advised not to attempt the Rainbow Mountain hike. If you're unsure about your suitability for the trek, consult a medical professional before your trip to Peru.

Once you've addressed all health considerations with your doctor and confirmed that hiking Rainbow Mountain is safe for you, bear in mind the following tips for your expedition:

  • Always allocate a day or two for acclimatization to the high altitude before undertaking the Rainbow Mountain trek or any strenuous physical activity.
  • Seek advice from your healthcare provider regarding any medications that might aid in adjusting to high altitudes.
  • Indulge in coca tea, a centuries-old herbal remedy used by locals to alleviate altitude sickness.
  • Avoid indulging in heavy meals, alcohol, and smoking.
  • Maintain optimal hydration throughout your journey.

Tips For Travelers

  • When you get to the main photo spot at the bottom of Rainbow Mountain, try climbing up the hill past the first viewpoint for a more peaceful view.
  • Start your journey early so you can avoid the crowds of tourists who usually arrive between 2-3 AM.
  • The weather at the top of Rainbow Mountain can be unpredictable, so make sure to bring a windbreaker and sunscreen in case of sudden changes.
  • Take your time during the hike and take breaks as needed, especially since Rainbow Mountain is higher than Cusco.
  • Listen to your body's signals and take care of yourself.
