Begin your day with a picturesque drive to the quaint town of San Pablo de Valera, 26 miles from Chachapoyas. From there, embark on an adventure to the stunning Gocta Waterfall, one of the tallest in the world at an impressive 2,530 feet (771 meters). The journey includes a horseback ride lasting about an hour and a half, followed by a one-hour hike through the lush cloud forest.

The trail is alive with vibrant wildlife and rich vegetation. Look out for colorful toucans, playful monkeys, and perhaps the flamboyant Andean cock-of-the-rock. As you approach the falls, the thunderous sound of water crashing into the pool below grows louder, and mist envelops you, offering a refreshing embrace. The sight of the towering waterfall, cascading against a backdrop of emerald green, is simply mesmerizing.

After taking in the splendor of Gocta, return to San Pablo to enjoy a traditional local lunch. Savor the flavors of the region before heading back to Chachapoyas, reflecting on the natural beauty you’ve experienced.

Set out to discover the awe-inspiring Kuelap, an ancient citadel of the Chachapoyas culture. The distinctive cylindrical structures provide a fascinating prelude to the grandeur of Kuelap.

Continue to Nuevo Tingo, where a modern cable car awaits. Glide high above valleys and mountains, enjoying panoramic views during the short ride to the base of Kuelap. From there, ascend to the fortress on foot or horseback, reaching this monumental site perched at an altitude of 9,842 feet (3,000 meters).

Kuelap’s colossal stone walls and strategic position atop a rugged mountain make it a breathtaking sight. Explore the three-tiered fortress, where intricate circular structures are adorned with geometric friezes in rhomboidal and zigzag patterns. These architectural details reveal the sophistication and artistry of the Chachapoyas people. The surrounding vistas of dramatic cliffs and verdant landscapes complete the unforgettable experience.

After your exploration, return to Nuevo Tingo for a traditional lunch that highlights the rich culinary heritage of the region. Then, travel back to Chachapoyas, carrying with you the stories of an ancient civilization and the beauty of the Andes.
