Embark on an invigorating morning journey to the quaint village of Cruz Pata, the gateway to the ancient world of Karajía. As we ascend the winding roads leading to this mysterious site, you will be greeted by a breathtaking panorama of Luya’s Plaza de Armas, a serene tapestry of local life and vibrant culture.
At Cruz Pata, also revered as the Meseta de las Cruces or the Plateau of the Crosses, our adventure takes a mystical turn. From here, you can choose to traverse the scenic trail on foot or by horseback, immersing yourself in the lush, verdant landscapes that envelop the path. The approximately 30-minute journey will transport you back in time. Upon arrival, prepare to be captivated by the enigmatic Sarcophagi of Karajía. These towering figures, standing up to 8.2 feet tall, are an awe-inspiring tribute to the pre-Inca Chachapoyas culture. Crafted with an intricate blend of stone, wood, and clay, these anthropomorphic structures are perched precariously atop a cliff, preserved through centuries in astonishing condition. Their haunting presence offers a profound connection to the ancient spirits of the land.
Following this transcendent experience, we will return to Luya, where a delightful local lunch awaits, offering flavors as rich and satisfying as the morning’s exploration.
In the afternoon, our journey leads us to the spellbinding Caverns of Quiocta in the district of Lamud. Step into a subterranean wonderland where nature’s artistry is displayed in the dramatic formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Each of the cavern’s seven chambers, named after their unique and whimsical shapes, makes this visit a perfect counterpart to the morning’s historical journey.
As dusk falls, we will retreat to the comfort of Chachapoyas city, where you can unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures at your hotel, nestled in the heart of this enchanting region. Prepare for an evening of relaxation and anticipation of yet another day of exquisite experiences.
Start your day with an early morning departure to Kuelap, a majestic architectural masterpiece crafted by the Chachapoyas civilization. As you travel through the enchanting Andean landscapes, take a moment to admire the panoramic view of the archaeological site of Macro, nestled on a hillside across from the serene Utcubamba River. The ruins, suspended between earth and sky, offer a captivating glimpse into the ancient past.
Upon reaching the quaint village of Nuevo Tingo, board a bus that will whisk you away to the cable railway station, "la estación del Teleférico." Here, prepare for a dramatic ascent, climbing from 6,562 feet above sea level to an impressive 9,842 feet. As the cable car glides upward, marvel at the unfolding vistas of lush valleys and towering peaks, a testament to the raw beauty of this remote region.
Disembark at La Malca, where the adventure continues with a 1.5-mile hike to the citadel of Kuelap. For those seeking a less strenuous journey, an optional horse ride is available, following a picturesque path that winds through the rugged terrain. As you approach Kuelap, perched atop the formidable Barreta Mountain, the imposing sight of its colossal walls and precipitous cliffs will leave you in awe.
Once inside, explore the citadel's intricate architecture, characterized by its distinctive circular buildings adorned with rhomboid patterns. This well-organized urban center, with its complex network of structures and terraces, offers a profound insight into the Chachapoyas' way of life. The surrounding landscape enhances the experience, providing a natural spectacle that is nothing short of unforgettable.
After soaking in the historical ambiance and breathtaking views, begin your descent back to Nuevo Tingo. Here, you will enjoy a well-deserved lunch, savoring local flavors that reflect the region's rich culinary heritage.
Conclude your day with a journey back to Chachapoyas city. As night falls, relax and unwind in this charming town, reflecting on the day's adventures and the timeless beauty of Kuelap.
Included: breakfast and lunch.
Departure to the village of San Bartolo marks the beginning of an exciting day. Upon arrival, embark on a 1.2-mile walk towards the Mausoleums of Revash.
The Chachapoyas people placed great importance on preserving the deceased's body—sarcophagi of various shapes and forms were constructed for burying mummies of particularly important individuals, placing them in hard-to-reach locations. These impressive funeral houses, which can have up to three floors, are built on steep cliffs and still retain their ocher red and cream-painted walls. Your guide will tell you about the fearless Chachapoyas warriors who once lived in these mountains. The mausoleums are best observed from a distance, providing a striking view against the rugged landscape.
After exploring Revash, return to Leymebamba for lunch, enjoying local flavors that showcase the region's culinary traditions. Post-lunch, visit the Museum of the Mummies of the Lagoon of the Condors. The museum's gardens boast a stunning collection of orchids, featuring over 100 local varieties, creating a vibrant and fragrant atmosphere.
Inside the museum, discover a valuable collection of quipus, the ancient Inca system used for accounting crops and animals. In the climate-controlled warehouse, see some of the 240 mummies found in the Lagoon of the Condors, a testament to the area's rich historical significance.
Conclude the day with a return journey to Chachapoyas, reflecting on the fascinating sights and history encountered throughout the day.
